The Core Pilates Principles For A Strong and Balanced Mind and Body

There is a reason the Pilates is so effective and why it has become so popular. 

It works. It gets results. It makes you FEEL and LOOK amazing. It positively affects ALL aspects of your daily life.

I will share with you some of the most amazing transformations that some of my clients have achieved in the future posts and how oftentimes they originally considered themselves “unlikely Pilates students.”

But today I wanted to introduce you to the 9 Principles of Pilates.

It is about being “present” and ” in control of your body” and staying “connected in your body and mind.” 

That’s where the power is, and when you will start to see and feel it.

The 9 Principles of Pilates

    The breath is the bridge between the body and the mind. It promotes focus and draws the mind back to our body and present existence. In Pilates the breath is integrated into every movement to improve the flow of oxygen throughout our body, give power, focus and precision.
  2. Concentration
    Is the centered focus to the task at hand and is executed with control. Without concentration the exercises lack their purpose, proper form and results. It is far more important to complete only as many reps as concentration can be maintained, than mindlessly just moving the body and ingraining poor patterns in the mind and body.
  3. Control
    To be in control of one’s body when performing the exercises is to focus on the purpose of each movement pattern and to be able to maintain the correct form, alignments and effort through the entire exercise.
  4. Centering
    In Pilates all movement comes from the “powerhouse” or center of the body. One of the most unique facets of Pilates is the focus on understanding and developing a strong, stable and flexible center. The center is the foundation from where all movement arises and is controlled.
  5. Precision
    The ability to understand the proper form, purpose and then perform the exercises with efficiency requires discipline and practice. Precision is the result of concentration, control, centering and dedicated practice.
  6. Balanced Muscle Development
    Understanding, developing and maintaining correct alignment is essential to Pilates. With practice you will grow in your own body awareness and develop balanced posture and movement patterns which lead to improved posture, increased comfort and ease of mobility and enhanced physical abilities and stamina.
  7. Rhythm and Flow
    All the movements and transitions in Pilates are done with a focused intention and a sense of flow and rhythm. The flow in Pilates creates smooth, graceful, efficient and functional movements. The rhythm needed to perform the exercises requires concentration and yields a meditative quality to the movements. It also decreases the stress put on the joints and develops movement patterns that bring unity to the body.
  8. Whole Body Movement
    Pilates at its core is about integration and unity: integrating movement into a smooth flowing whole body experience, integrating the mind and body to create focus and purpose, integrating the mind, body and spirit to be a unified whole to create a life of balance and peace.
  9. Relaxation
    To be healthy and balanced in both body and mind it is important to understand the balance between effort and relaxation. Pilates teaches efficiency of movement and helps train you to use just the amount of effort needed to complete the exercise correctly, without straining or stressing your body or mind. The ability to release unnecessary tension or strain in our bodies allows us to find ease, endurance and flow in movement and in all aspects of our lives.

  • Release and Restore Class: In this class you will experience a flow of therapeutic movement massage, stretching and endurance building stabilizing poses. Find peace, stability and control through movement and breathing. Experience the healing, balance and peace it needs now more than ever.
